I think they did that to keep it within the sides of the road, and to give it that step pyramid look. In contrast to the triangle formed by the road going off in the distant.

surely they could have made the font a wee bit smaller, or the ...'s a wee bit closer together.

I think if it was smashed or shrunk anymore the entire work would feel a bit empty, though odd and not as I would have done it, I have to repect the origional intentions . . . whatever those are!

I've been seeing and hearing this a lot lately. juxtapolemic may be having a little fun with it - but I'm sure others are practicing a little Labovian magic on it, unbeknownst* to them.

Expect it'll be in the usage books soon...

I've always thought it was (and used) jibe not jive, and assumed people who used jive misheard or misunderstood.

But maybe this is exactly what you are referring to; you've just written it over my head, cunning linguist that you are.

Ooooh. And I got in trouble at work with a girl for mentioning a "bilabial" plosive.

But yes, jibe is the word intended. It's not unusual, though, for the word to change based on persistent usage. So if enough people, for long enough, continue to say "jive with", then that will be the phrase - especially likely, since "jive" is not a word truly "reserved" in the lexicon for anything else (it's technically slang).

Witness "nucular" - W. is helping us along with that one. I hear it more all the time.

I was just reading how there's been general confusion over turgid versus turbid for decades, even though they're not the same word at all. Eventually, one may go away (morse the pity).

And it's really a shame about "awesome". That used to be a very useful word. Now it's meaningless.

Think maybe in the paperback maybe he'll put more events in the history gutter?

I don't think that he'll put any more in the paperback edition. That's just my personal opinion, though. I mean, I heard that he did stop at a date far before the release date. I haven't finished the book yet (I just got it), so I don't even know if I'm just talking out my behind.

I got a package, but there's no sign of a paperback. When did you get this?

He got it 9 days before the official release.

                          exciting!

Yeah, and speaking of, you should pick up a copy of the Gulf Coast journal Vol. 19 No. 2, which featured drafts of Sam's page 1 from 2002 through the published edition. It was very interesting to see the progression, to say the least.

The title of the section on MZD is Only Evolutions. I strongly recommend those here who enjoyed OR to find and shelve it.
