Limited Second Edition Copies of the Book to Be Sold at the Event With Proceeds Benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 13, 2011) — This Halloween, for one night only, Mark Z. Danielewski's The Fifty Year Sword is returning to REDCAT. Last year, some people drove from as far away as Georgia to catch one of the sold-out shows. This year's performance will include 40-foot shadows by shadowcaster Christine Marie, sound design by John Zalewski, live music, and maybe a pumpkin or two—all conducted by the author himself. Except for the pumpkins. As Danielewski once said "While it's true you can carve a pumpkin, conducting a pumpkin, it turns out, is impossible."

Danielewski, who is best known for his bestselling novels of Leaves and , said of The Fifty Year Sword, "It's a ghost story for adults who still remember what it's like to wonder and fear like a child—to find confusion in the obvious, delight in strangeness and reason in the unseen."

The Fifty Year Sword tells the tale of a recently divorced seamstress who encounters a shadowy Story Teller who recounts for five orphans a story of revenge, a harrowing quest, and a terrible sword. Said a quote in the Los Angeles Times' Jacket Copy review, "The various voices braided together with a burbling momentum . . . my heart was racing with all the peaks and the valleys in the story."

A limited number of rare second edition copies of The Fifty Year Sword will be available for purchase at the event. Book sale proceeds will benefit the Los Angeles chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which will also have a booth at REDCAT that evening.

Prior to the show, Danielewski will give away three copies of The Fifty Year Sword via his Facebook (facebook.com/markzdanielewski) and Twitter (@markdanielewski) pages. In addition, cast information and on-site giveaways will be announced on these pages in the coming days.

Said co-producer Mali Elfman, "Last year, I was blown away by the show, so I feel quite honored to be a part of the amazing team that brought it to life . . . I think the audience is in for a special night with a lot of fun, new twists."

Audience members are encouraged to dress for the occasion. Last year, a flurry of cat costumes peppered the audience in anticipation of Danielewski's upcoming cat-centric novel, The Familiar, and that trend is likely to continue this year.

The Fifty Year Sword will be held at REDCAT on Monday, October 31, 2011 at 8:30 p.m. All tickets are $20 general admission ($16 for students with current I.D.) and are available at www.redcat.org or by calling (213) 237-2800. REDCAT is located at the corner of W. 2nd and Hope Streets, inside the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex (631 West 2nd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012).
