As you can probably guess by now, the hidden hidden message is Pelafina's response to a letter of Johnny's (which we don't have), in which he expressed a desire to stop running away, fighting, drowning etc., and become a mechanic. Pelafina is dead against this, because she does not want such a humdrum existance ('IN THE CROWD') for her little boy. So, against her better judgement, she recommends a job in the Air Force ('AF') where he'll do quite well ('ACE').

Not sure if anyone will notice this, but I am actually buying this AF part...but why cant it read:

This meaning that he his mother would desire him to be an air force person, but the not racing the crowd, while admittily using slang isnt quite P. way and she does have a higher intellect. I think she thinks her son should be above people and not just another member competeing in society, or the crowd. Please feel free to critique me on this.

Well, it would have to be mis-spelled as RACEIN' for a start. It doesn't seem like P's style; best to leave Stencil's very funny gag as just that I think.

I saw a few people put this sentance with a slash between and I had a thought...although if people have already had this particular thought you may shoot me because I see that this is quite a common thing to happen to people who are new and post things...and yes I am new.

Is it possible that A FACE IN A CLOUD refers to Donnie who was a pilot and NO TRACE IN THE CROWD refers to Zampano seeing as how Johnny says that when he tried looking for records of Zampano he found basically nothing?

Could it also be possible that A FACE IN A CLOUD could be a vague reference to the sightings of the children at Fatima? The children were given a message by an apparition of the "Blessed Mother", which could be Pelafina giving Johnny another clue that there was an important message within that letter, if Pelafina was viewing herself as the "Blessed Mother" and Johnny as of course a child. I think it goes without saying that the message within that letter is indeed an important one.

Any thoughts?

Mama P does not seem to believe that she really posed a threat to Johnny and, paired with her despair from her sitchuation, had lost hope in any God and only prayed/plead to her son. I wonder if the message was one of those "instructions for killing" God and the concept thereof.

In TNR, which is quite fantastical and unreal, faith seems to work. Maybe not so much in Johnny's world. Perhaps the way he writes with contempt of Zampano (even if he's a nom de plum of a younger Johnny, perhaps) is because he resents the notion because, as with Delial, the innocent suffer the world over but God's image lies in the clouds alone, not amongst mankind.
