Ok, in the letter to Karen (pg. 389), Navy says on page three that this letter is a code to decipher. At the end, Johnny says "I" mean that line about a code to decipher.

First, is there a code, for us, in that letter?

Second, "I mean", from from Navy...by Johnny?

what do you think?

i think what johnny means there (the full quote being «reminding me here, i mean that line about "a code to decipher", how the greatest love letters are always encoded for the one and not the many») is that it is not a literal code, but a letter written so that only karen would understand it's full meaning and navy's true intent in writing it. i don't get why he says i mean that line...hope this helps. i know it's kind of an old post, but i was busy plumbing the depths of old hol stuff and came across this uncontinued thread...

he says 'i mean' because the footnote is placed at the end of the letter, but he wants the reader to know which part it was that reminded him.
