Zampano is a character's name in the old film, La Strada. It's not a term or definition, but rather just a name.

Actually, Zampano looks a lot like zampona, which is a type of bagpipe. Read page 337, when the footnote talks about Perilaus and his torture device. Then Johnny says, "can't help thinking of old man Z here and those pipes in his head working overtime." So Zampano is like his own torture device made out of pipes, or something. I dunno.
